It would be two months on 16 February that a physiotherapy intern Jyoti Singh Pandey was allegedly beaten and raped by 6 men and she died after her great fight of 13 days. One of these six accused was declared a juvenile by the court based on a mere birth certificate (17 and a half years).
I attended a panel discussion in Central Institute of Education, Delhi University in which one of the panel members was Rebecca M. John (lawyer). When asked about the juvenile crime and punishment she replied that "We cannot and should not change laws based on just one case, however dreadful the crime be."
She even raised a question on the sequence of incidents told by police. She said "Police twists the story suiting their own needs. Its not necessary that the juvenile has committed all the atrocities in the sequence.
Police is highlighting the name of juvenile unnecessarily."
This may be one point of view.
But if by any chance the story given by police is true and that juvenile is responsible for Damini's death then what?
And its been 2 months but still rest of the five accused of this rape incident are damn alive. Even though the case is in fast track court but Damini is still waiting for justice. Should a Juvenile be spared irrespective of the dreadfulness of the crime
