Ya, but Freedom of speech cease to exist, if it’s not for the person who disagrees with you!
WHAT ABOUT NON BELIEVERS?
Only in case of religious disputes does the law side with the people who threaten to take law and order into their own hands.
If secularism is about respecting beliefs of people from other religions, shouldn’t it also be about respecting beliefs of people who are non religious and Non believers?
Secularism I believe is the root cause of all cultural terrorism today.
What secularism did was create a space for all religions to coexist. And it was one thing all religious people agreed to, because none of the religions like to be questioned. I mean that’s how they have stayed relevant across history. By keeping out rational scrutiny.
But the non-believers were conveniently left out. Even in the constitution. There are provisions of protecting sentiments of religious people. None for the Non believers!
So ironically the same constitution that guarantees you freedom of speech, puts a clause where exercising the same freedom in context of religion is considered blasphemy and is a punishable offense.
And if targeting minorities is branded communal! Then doesn't our constitution stand guilty of infringing on the rights of the biggest minority called Non believers? Freedom of thought! Because we have no place to go when the peace loving religious people threaten to burn our houses and destroy property.
For this reason I think the Constitution should be amended to a more honest version. By the religious to the religious for the religious! Speak of the fantasy called separation of state and religion. So ironically, In India biggest cause of communal violence might be our secular constitution! Secularism in India involves govt. elected by majority siding with a fringe minority that’s threatening violence to deny the rights to an individual.
A DEEPLY RELIGIOUS SOCIETY CAN’T BE SECULAR!
Deeply religious people can’t be secular! Because all the religions contain mutually contradictory postulates!
An animal holy for one religion is a hamburger for another. An animal so sacred that they had to pass a legislation to ban it’s slaughter. Do you expect people who would like to see people jailed for killing a cow being friendly to another person who eats it, just because he happens to be of different religion!!
Pork is haram in religion A, relished in religion B. So B people are eating what A think is haram!!!!
And these are just food items, you discuss other practices, you realize although all the holy books were written by the same author , there is very little they agree upon! One man’s delight is other man’s sin.
Last year a man in Mumbai questioned Mary drinking milk is not a miracle and something can be explained by capillary action. A case of blasphemy was filed against him, he had to leave the country.
Here are these religious people who can’t tolerate cartoons and rational arguments by Non Believers. Do you think they can tolerate practices by their counterparts in other religions that are considered SINS in their own religion?
The only scenario it’s seems possible is when the people in question don’t take their religion/mythology/holy texts TOO seriously!
Expecting deeply religious people to be secular is the biggest delusion.
Because religion is about beliefs, and beliefs don’t give you any room for reason. And tolerance requires giving space to reason!
And act of reason applied to religion becomes an act of treason!
And because religious ideas never had to compete to prove their worth, like scientific ideas!
That’s why any rational scrutiny, any attempt at a reasonable debate would be deemed offensive and disrespectful.
The whole essense of these religious sentimentalists seem to be,
“We are offended by what you said, and we are offended because we don’t know how to logically defend what we believe in. So we would kill you, to make peace with our beliefs!!!”
Aur bhai sahi bhi hai!
Because always it’s easy to silence a person than debate him!!!
MOVIES/CARTOONS DON’T LEAD TO COMMUNAL TENSIONS, RELIGIONS DO!And because of this tyranny of religion! Discussing religion is a thought crime.
That’s why our secularism is based on fear
We silently hate each other, living in a constant state of fear that prevents any honest debate.
That’s why it’s impossible in India to have a rational discussion about religious censorship without taking a very very liberal stand!
So liberal that often the debate becomes pointless.
Because honest opinions about any religion is tantamount to creating communal tensions!
Oh, his speech might lead to communal tensions.
Speeches don’t lead to communal tensions. Religions do.
You want to rid this world of communal tensions. Ask the state to not take religion so seriously!
And Judiciary instead of banning films and cartoons, should tell the fringe groups, “If you have to defend an idea by resorting to violence, may be the problem lies in the idea and not the argument/depiction!”
And even then if those FRINGE groups threaten violence, they should be welcomed and we should let the army take care of their sentiments.
Just because you are offended doesn’t make you right!
Can you imagine what our world would have been? Had the fans of Newton threatened Einstein with murder when he found deviations from his theory. Or the fans of Einstein threatening Neils Bohr, when his ideas of quantum physics clashed with Einstein’s vision of the universe ? People with old ideas burning people with new ideas! We would have been a spiritually enlightened specie without light and electricity!
SECULARIM: MARKETING CONVENIENCE
Communal tensions make sure that various religious communities live in clusters. Religion is a free feature, to map populations. it allows them targetted marketing, like Google and Facebook.
So secularism is nothing but a marketing convenience in elections.
A diffused society that is tolerant is difficult to manipulate!
SECULARISM CAN’T BE A ONE WAY STREETImagine a thought experiment.
Where a bunch of non-believers teamed up and started threatening violence against release of films based on mythology and scriptures because they propagate unverified claims that can influence young children in undesirable ways. Films that insult people’s intelligence.
Would the govt. be prepared to ban those films ?
So, if you allow films that propagate unverified religious claims, it’s only fair you allow films that might touch upon religion/religious people.
Some people find solace in religion, some in reason!
Some in mythology, some in films and fiction!
Some people find peace in worship, for some work is worship.
If we don’t threaten you at your places of worship, for your own God’s sake, please keep away from the theatres where people like Kamal Hasan’s fans go to worship!
TAKE THE LEADBut if religious people insist on the cliché of not hurting sentiments, why don’t you take a lead.
Then stop chanting prayers at 4 in your holy places because it disturbs my sleep. If you really believe God lies within, stop using loudspeakers to reach out to him.
If God can see everything, he surely will be able to hear everything.
Stop building places of worship in the middle of the road. If you are so religious buy a property to worship and stop encroaching on public property. Or better ask your Gods to build some for you!
Because frankly your religious sentiments traffic jam traffic.
But if we don’t demolish those places of worship despite the inconvenience, it’s only fair, you also keep your hands off movie theaters and art galleries. Because for a lot of artists those places are sacred!
