Is Spreading Awareness enough to stop women molestation?
We, the students of Central Institute of Education (University of Delhi) gathered together yesterday to discuss about what all measures could be adopted to attain a sustainable solution against the molestation of women. And the major point that emerged in the discussion was "Creating Awareness in the society and work to improve upon the mentality of Male-Oriented society".
All the students of CIE are going to different schools for their "School Experience Programme" (i.e. Training). So, they proposed that we must deliver a lesson plan in our classes enlightening them on the present situation, gender inequality and motivate them to have respect for both the genders. I thought it can be a nice idea but somewhere in my mind it was there that Media is creating ample awareness in our society and even kids are well into their TV sets.
I went to my school's Annual Functions today, i.e., 24th of December and you can very well see the situation there. The girls even did a play depicting the ways to protect themselves from eve-teasing (Chilly spray and hair clips in buses and other places). It proves that these girls know very well the current situation.
But still I want to say it aloud that the most important thing is changing the mentality of our Boys because even martial art cannot help a girl who is trapped by 6 men. It is a long process I know but we have to start it from somewhere.
